George DiSarro was born in Pittsburgh, PA on February 18th, 1933. He attended Duquesne University where he played trombone and trumpet before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in music education.
He served two years as an Army bandsman before becoming the first trumpeter for Tommy Dorsey’s orchestra from 1955 to 1959. He then left the band and joined Frank Sinatra’s “The Voice of Hollywood” radio program from 1961-1965. In 1965 Severinsen became musical director for The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson when it returned to New York City television (NBC) after being filmed in California since 1954 by Jack Paar
In 1973 he began conducting orchestras at major international venues including Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. He also became conductor of The Tonight Show Orchestra in 1982
In 1992 he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to brass music, and received an Emmy Award from Tony Bennett for lifetime achievement.
