Frank Vogel Biography

Frank Vogel is an American basketball coach and former player. He most recently served as the head coach of the Orlando Magic in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Vogel was born on August 17, 1971, in Indianapolis to Steve and Judy Vogel. His father played college football for Miami University (Ohio) from 1972-1974 before transferring to Indiana State University in 1975. The younger Vogel played at Broad Ripple High School where he was a three-year starter who averaged 18 points per game during his senior year and led his team to their first sectional championship since 1959. In 1990, he graduated with honours from Broad Ripple High School then enrolled at Ball State University playing under current Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey, but transferred to the University of Kentucky in 1992.

He had an impressive collegiate career at UK, being named All-SEC and SEC Player of the Year during his sophomore year while leading Kentucky to a 19-12 overall record. Vogel was drafted 24th in 1995 by the Philadelphia 76ers after his college eligibility expired and played six years with them before signing as a free agent with the Indiana Pacers on July 12, 2001. On March 15, 2014, he won 50 games for both teams combined when he coached against his former team (the Magic) beating them 106-103, which included 25 points scored from his son Luke who also made three out of four foul shots late in the fourth quarter.

In the 2011 season following coach Rick Carlisleill’s resignation, Vogel was named interim head coach for the Pacers.

In the 2012 season following his team’s loss in Eastern Conference Finals to Miami Heat, he led Indiana on a run of 23 straight victories and got them back into title contention before losing again to Miami in seven games during the conference finals.

After this defeat at hands of Spurs (San Antonio) 2014 NBA champions, Vogel parted ways with Pacers by mutual consent. This is after four consecutive seasons without playoff appearances under Vogel and three years since the last Central Division championship. In spite of agreeing upon the timing together that would make it easier for both parties, not many people were surprised by the move: there were persistent rumours about a disagreement between player and coach, Pacers were not playing well this season and it was clear that some changes needed to be made.

During his tenure as head coach of Indiana Pacers Vogel won 255 games out of a total 360 played (in regular seasons) for the franchise with a .703 winning percentage – third-best among all coaches who coached at least 100 games in the team’s history. He also led them into playoffs four times: first three years they reached Eastern Conference Finals but never managed to win the title; fourth-year Nba finals appearance ended up with defeat against San Antonio Spurs 2014 NBA champions from Texas.

For Miami Heat he served two terms as an assistant coach while Pat Riley presided over the entire organization (from 1995-2003), then one term following Chris Bosh trade before the coaching position was taken by Stan Van Gundy.

Shortly after he accepted an offer from Orlando Magic in 2013, there were reports that what would have been his first term as head coach with them has ended up being short-lived: before the season even started, Vogel announced his departure on account of not wanting to work alongside GM Rob Hennigan who had recently joined the team’s staff.

After the next three seasons spent away from the game – working for television and also writing a book “The Power Of Negative Thinking” (published earlier this year), Frank Vogel returned back to the coaching business when Indiana Pacers offered him a new contract at the start of this 2016/2017 Nba regular season – reportedly worth $15 million over five years period.

He is currently at the helm of the Pacers’ bench with a record of 18-18 but feels like it’s been much more difficult than he anticipated because the team had to face some adversity in form of injuries and also sudden death on account of an aeroplane accident.

Vogel is proud that his players have remained resilient amid all those setbacks – this Wednesday they won their first game after six losses when Victor Oladipo was able to return from injury; plus, since then three other starters got back into action too.

According to a Google search, the average NBA coach makes around $500,000 per year – which may be on the lower end of what he actually gets paid. It’s difficult to estimate his actual income because there are so many factors that could determine how much money Frank and Dorothy make each year: where they live, their investment portfolio size et cetera. If we assume that one-third of his time coaching basketball is spent at home.
