Jack Charlton House

Jack was born in Elderslie Hamlet near Tarbolton Village Scotland but emigrated to Canada in 1892. He was the son of Thomas Charlton and Elizabeth Anderson, who had both been born at Elderslie Hamlet near Tarbolton Village Scotland but emigrated from there to join relatives in Ontario, Canada

Jack’s father is said to have died when he (at age nine) along with his mother and sister were on a ship headed for Quebec City that accidentally set out into the open sea due to foggy conditions. The family survived by clinging onto floating debris until they could be rescued. After this event, Jack took over running their farm as his older brother Andrew remained single for life after being injured shortly before their father’s death

In 1898 Jack married Lillian Brooks who bore him seven children: six girls and one boy

In 1911, at the age of 40 he was elected as a Conservative to represent East York in North Riding of Ontario County and would spend his first term campaigning for women’s suffrage. He became an active supporter of the United Farmers’ Association, but later switched allegiance to join with other farmers who were dissatisfied with its policies

Jack Charlton House is located on Front Street in Belleville across from Memorial Park cemetery. It was built by Jack around 1912 when he married Lillian Brooks because she had no family home here while her husband did not want her living too far away after they wed so this house could be their new home together. This Victorian two-storey red-brick residence has four bedrooms upstairs and three below.

The house remained in the Charlton family for many years. In 1949 and 1950, it served as headquarters of Belleville’s Canadian Legion Branch #289 until they found a more suitable building on Park Street. Jack continued living there with his son Walter who took over managing what was then known as “Charlton Drugs” after he retired from being mayor of Belleville in 1957 when he reached age 70.

Walter died at 73 so Lillian sold the home to her daughter Elaine (Jack had passed away earlier). The new owner made some significant changes to the exterior including tearing off dormers which were added by Jack’s eldest daughter Dorothy Jeanette because she did not like them; adding aluminium siding instead of brick; replacing the bay window with a large glass sliding door, and replacing boxed eaves on the front wall.

It was sold again in 1999 to the current owners who restored it back to its original form.”
