Biography

Brackman began his journalism career as music critic for The Village Voice from 1972 to 1982; he has also contributed articles to Rolling Stone magazine since 1981 and written about rock culture for various other publications including Esquire, Newsday, Spin Magazine, TV Guide,. Since 1977 Jacob’s primary focus has been pop music criticism but he has also covered politics and economics among many other topics over the years.

Brackman’s early work as a music critic is notable for its mix of first-person reportage and a critical engagement with the legacy of pop culture criticism in America. In his article “Rock: The Last Generation,” Jacob argued that rock had already lost its ability to engender new youth cultures like those seen during the 1960s, and after 1979 he gradually concentrated on more traditional forms of journalism about politics, economics, education etc. while continuing to contribute occasional articles on popular music both here and abroad.

In 2008 Brackman became an independent scholar at Harvard University where he has since taught courses related to literary history, aesthetics, cultural studies and business writing; these include Writing from Life (a seminar course), American Literature in Transition, and The Culture of Consumption.

Brackman is also a lecturer in the Department of Visual Arts at Harvard, where he teaches courses on Pop Art (in collaboration with David Joselit), American postwar painting, and Postmodernism.

My clearest early life memory was a visit to my family’s summer house on the North Shore of Long Island when I was three or four years old. We had lunch there one day; it would have been about 1954. There wasn’t much beach left by then because people kept taking sand for construction purposes but we still managed to find an area where I could play happily.”
