Biography

Jenny O’Hara, born on August 18th in Pennsylvania, 1941 was an American actress best known for her role as a cast member of the television show “The Andy Griffith Show” and she played opposite Gary Cooper in ‘The General Died at Dawn’. She had a very successful acting career but some personal life choices were not so great. In this blog post, we’ll take you through some interesting events that happened to Jenny during her lifetime and how they affected her career.

In 1956 when Jenny wasn’t even 15 years old, she ran away from home after being caught smoking with friends. Her mother travelled all over the country looking for her daughter until finally finding out where she had gone – Mexico City. It took another three years for her mother to convince Jenny that she couldn’t pursue a lifestyle like this and after finally returning home in 1959, her career would soon take off.

In 1958 when the family moved to California from Pennsylvania, they had no money so Jenny got an acting job at Disneyland entertaining children on Main Street. Within four years of living there while still attending school, she was given some guest roles on “The Andy Griffith Show” which eventually led to a regular role as Aunt Bee’s niece Emma Louise Harper Chesterfield Taylor Jones – yes those are all her names! Her character was considered one of the most popular characters with viewers because it showed how someone who never really achieved their dreams could find happiness right where they were by being content with what they had.

In 1959 she would win Emmy Awards for “Outstanding Juvenile Female in a Comedy Series” and Outstanding Performance by an Actress Under Ten Playing Age Twelve or Younger. The following year, 1960, the family moved to New York City because her father had been offered a job as Vice-President of NBC’s Radio & Television Division.

She attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts where she won another two Emmys – one for acting (1960) and one for writing, producing, directing, editing and starring in a theatrical production with classmates entitled “The Passionate Pilgrim.” It was based on John Bunyan’s book about Christian pilgrimage from this world to the next which was written in 1678.

For her senior year, she attended the University of California at Los Angeles where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She graduated from UCLA with a degree in Art History and Creative Writing.

She has appeared on numerous television series and movies over the years including “Peyton Place” (1964), “The Long Hot Summer” (1985) which starred Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Gene Hackman and Susan Sarandon; as well as “Desperate Housewives” (2004-2012). Her autobiography is entitled “Jenny O’Hara: My Life.”
