This is one of only two surviving examples that Taylor himself designed from his time at this address  It should also be noted that it was during World War II when he gave up architecture to serve with the South African Air Force. In 1947, an article appeared about him entitled “Architects are Fighting Men Too” which led to him being awarded a medal by King George VI for bravery under fire while serving overseas.

The building comprises three floors over basement level and its design reflects the stark minimalism so characteristic of Taylor’s work – careful consideration went into ensuring no unnecessary ornamentation would be present.

The Reneilwe Letsholonyane House was designed by architect Herbert Stanley (Herman) Taylor who had emigrated to South Africa from England before WWI at the behest of Cecil John Rhodes for whom he worked on his estate near Durban. He helped design buildings such as Groote Schuur and Kearsney College during that time but one day arrived unannounced at The Adelphi Building which was home to The Chamber of Mines and offered to design a new building for them for free.
